While the teacher's job action is occurring, students can continue to read and research about our topics we are studying.
Humanities 8
Do some research about something that interests you in the Middle Ages. We'll be doing an independent study project at the end of the unit, so you can get going on your topic now. You can also research catapult and trebuchet designs for our future construction plans.
Humanities 9
Keep going on your novels. Go to the public lirary to get another one if you finish yours. Look up the issues that are mentioned in your book: AIDS, child labour, slavery, child soldiers, etc. There's a lot to be learned about all of these issues. Start thinking about a project you might want to take on after this novel study, Ryan's Well, Free the Children, A Day for Africa, etc. So many great things we can do to help!

Holiday Requests
I'm getting a large number of requests for homework packages for students going on holidays during school time. I used to spend hours putting together packages for students, only to have the student return with nothing completed over and over again. So I'm not making homework packages any more. I will be available at lunch most Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays for help catching up and of course, there's X-block on Fridays. I fill out an "Absent Student" form each day your child is away, which they can then collect when they get back. It's up to the student to work extra hard to catch up.

Update from the Kingdom of Fun
Humanities 8
We are having a blast learning about the Middle Ages so far. We've been paying our taxes in M&Ms, watching some cool historical videos, and preparing skits for Monday. The manor map was due earlier this week, some folks still haven't handed it in yet!
Humanities 9
Most students have signed out their novels for our Global Awareness novel study. Lots of choices of books for every reading level. We will be having literature circles every Thursday for the next 4 Thursdays and an assignment of some sort will be due that day as well as the required reading. Students are to complete 1 novel in the next 4 weeks, minimum. I'm encouraging students to try to read more than one to get a broader perspective of the unit.

Humanities 8
We are now finished with the Holocaust unit and we are now starting the Middle Ages unit! We are all very excited to study this period of time, fascinatig stories and adventures await us.
Humanities 9
The presentations are a wee bit stalled, many groups haven't presented yet because of technology problems or "we're not ready" syndrome. Thursday, tomorrow, will be the Revolutions quiz, based on everyone's presentations. Next week we will be signing out novels for our Global Awareness unit we will be starting on Monday. Some deep thinking and debates are ahead!

Updates!
Humanities 8
We are almost finished the Holocaust unit. We have had some amazing discussions on "What can we do about evil?" and "Is it ever okay to lie?". The four reading responses are now all handed in and 3 of them are marked.
The Holocaust test is Tuesday, Feb 7!
In our writing workshop we have started our "Big Story", a lame title for an awesome assignment. We'll be working on our Big Stories every Friday for a while now.
Humanities 9
Our Revolutions Presentations are coming up soon! Feb 8, 9, 13, 14 are the presentation days, should be very entertaining!
We're also working on a Big Story in Hum 9, some awesome characters are developing.
